R.C.D. Espanyol de Barcelona is a Spanish international football club, and one of the most ancient and important Football clubs based in Barcelona, Spain. Espanyol’s home ground is Estadi Cornella-El Prat, having a capacity of 40,500 people. The club was inaugurated on August 2, 2009.

Espanyol football club was founded on October 28, 1900, as “Sociedad Espanola de Football” by the engineering student of the University of  Barcelona, ”Angel Rodríguez”. It was the time when football was freshly promoted from England. The club was dominated with mostly foreign players. One year later, the club became “Real Club Deportivo Espanyol” in 1912, when King Alfonso XIII bestowed the “royal” title upon the club.

Espanyol football club plays home games in blue and white striped jerseys. The colour was inspired by the shield of the great Catalan Admiral “Roger de Lluria”, who sailed the Mediterranean protecting Catalonia’s interest in the middle ages.

Espanyol football club won the first title, “Macaya Cup” in 1901. In 1929 they won the first Copa del Rey and repeated thrice in 1940, 2000 and 2006. The club also finished twice as runners-up in the UEFA Cup, firstly in 1988 and then just two seasons ago, when the team lost out to Sevilla in a penalty shoot-out at Hampden Park. In 1994, they finished top at the Segunda Division.

Espanyol football club has a strong history in producing many great players in the past. Players like Jordi Cruyff, Steve Finnan, Paco Flores, Adrian Heath, Ladislao Kubala, Walter Pandiani, Albert Riera, Maxi Rodriguez and the goalkeeper Ricardo Zamora, are the most famous and recognizable around the world.

For the last few seasons, Espanyol football club has found life to be an economic struggle, with all the money being tied up in completing the new stadium. Currently Espanyol football club plays its matches in the Olympic Stadium until the completion of club’s new stadium in Cornella, which is under construction and will be completed soon.
