Famous Football Player: Philipp Lahm (Germany)

by on June 15, 2010

Philipp Lahm

Philipp Lahm has earned international recognition as a strong defender for both his club (Bayern Munich) as well as the German National Team. Born in 1983, at age 26, Philipp Lahm has earned international recognition as a strong defender for both his club (Bayern Munich) as well as the German National Team.

He began his professional career with Bayern Munich’s Junior Team and enjoyed some success with the club until he found himself on loan to VFB Stuttgart for the 2003/04 and 2004/05 seasons. He returned to Bayern Munich in July of 2005 but was forced to endure a stint in rehab for a torn cruciate ligament before he could resume his defensive position with the team and make his first Bundesliga appearance with Bayern Munich in November of 2005.

In 2009/2010, Philipp Lahm was able to once more play right back, his preferred position. Though he got of to something of a slow start, he persevered and this past season was probably one of Lahm’s best ever.

Lahm missed nearly a year of International play with injuries in 2005/2006 but bounced right back, scoring the opening goal in the 2006 World Cup match between Germany and Costa Rica. He also played in the 2008 EURO where he was part of the starting line-up for all of Germany’s matches. In addition, he made this year’s German World Cup Team and after Michael Ballack withdrew, became the team captain.

Some of Philip Lahm’s personal achievements include:

• Man of the Match (Germany vs. Poland 2006 World Cup)
• WC MasterCard All Star Team 2006
• EURO 2008 Team of the Tournament
• Man of the Match (Semi-Final Germany Vs. Turkey 2008 EURO)
• Team of the Year UEFA (2006 and 2008)
• Team of the Year FIFA (2008)

There is little doubt that, if Lahm can stay healthy, he will be given more opportunities to hone his skills and to prove himself in both Germany and in the international arena.
